GEMSTONES

What are treated gemstones?

All gemstones are treated to enhance their natural radiance. Gemstones are usually heated to brighten their color. Emeralds are oiled or waxed to enhance their color and increase their durability. Blue topaz may be treated with irradiation, and blue sapphires may be treated with diffusion.

Do gems have healing properties?

Since the beginning of history, gemstones have been the subject of countless myths and have been believed to contain healing properties. Common in cultures around the world is the matching of gemstones with individuals based on their date of birth.

GOLD OR PLATINUM

What does ‘karat weight’ of gold refer to?

24K gold is pure gold and is too soft for jewelry. Therefore, 24K gold is mixed to increase its durability and hardness. So for example, 18K gold is 75% pure gold and 25% alloys.

What is platinum?

Platinum is a pure metal that is stronger and more durable than gold. It is also more rare and, thus, more valuable.

PEARLS

What are natural pearls?

A pearl is most commonly formed when a parasite invades an oyster. The oyster defends itself from the parasite by creating a sac around it. This sac is called a pearl sac. The osyter’s process of creating a sac by depositing what is called nacre continues for years until a pearl is formed.

Cultured pearls are formed by inserting a rounded bead and tissue from an oyster that is already producing nacre into an un-infected oyster. The artificially infected oyster then begins producing nacre to create a sac around the bead, thus creating a cultured pearl.
